Winter is a special time for the lagoon. We avoid the off season blues that so many other fisheries experience during the winter because of the lagoons unique geographic location. It lies right on the temperate/tropical boundary which gives us a crossover of many species. In the summer we have great fishing for warm water species like snook, tarpon, and jack crevalle, and in the winter our flats fishing for redfish, trout and black drum is excellent as well.
With the cyclical patterns of cold front followed by blue sky days, we have many great opportunities for sight fishing this time of year. The water is shallow and clear and we see almost every fish we catch during our winter season. Fly rods and light spinning gear are the tools of choice for this endeavor. On the days between fronts where we have some clouds, we use other techniques aside from sight fishing to keep our rods bent and our days productive. The lagoon is looking great this season with excellent grass coverage in most areas and crystal clear water. It looks like this winter might be slightly cooler than last year but it’s hard to say for sure. Either way, the fishing will be great during this season and I’m really looking forward to spending many great days with my clients hunting the shallows of the lagoon.
